If so, how long have you been natural/how long has it been since your last big chop? I use Shea Moisture products and regular conditioner most of the time.
Edit: I've been natural for about a year, and my hair type is a mix of all three levels under 4!

I've been natural for around 15 years. I never did the big chili just let my hair grow out and trimmed as needed. I use everything under the sun. Coconut oil is my shit right now.

Hey! I think Black women look so beautiful with bald or shaved heads! It's probably a little easier to manage too!
Do any of you use protective styles at all? Most of the time my hair is a fro. I like to blow or brush mine out so it's bigger.

I like to blow or brush mine out so it's bigger. I agree! Especially with the next few busy months, I need something simple and manageable. Right now, I only use a sponge to create the look Solange has in the picture. When my hair was longer, I usually did bantu knots. I prefer those over twist outs. Most times, I left it out in an afro too. I actually liked my tight curls so I'd put in a little texturizer to bring out the curls. When it gets a little longer, I want to straighten it to this look
But a little straighter

I like having my hair straight, so my main "goal" is to grow it out for a silk press. I just really don't want to put chemicals from a relaxer in it.
I did a texturizer late this (last!) year, sometime in September or October. It worked out pretty fine! The curl definition was cute and made my hair easier to work with, for sure. If I don't do that again, I'll just keep on with my afro.
Forgot to add: box braids are life when they're not too heavy! What kind of braids do you usually get?

Been natural for 16 years now. My mom made me do it way back when and I appreciate it. I was in high school when I went natural. I did it one time before I actually did it the second time and was successful. The first time my mom was like "you need a perm before you go do ____" so your hair will look nice. Which was bullshit, but I bought it to it because I want to look cute. My mom can do hair so really, she could have done my hair nice without the perm. The second time I was a sophomore (first time I was a freshmen). Nothing she could say would sway me then. I had a lot of fun watching my kitchen curl up and stuff. She and some hairdressers then would always ask me "why don't you perm your hair" or say "it would look so pretty/long if you permed it". Eventually she stopped that shit. Now she loves my hair. I wish she was more supportive the first time around though. That's really cool that your parents were cool with it and made you do it.

I want micros, but I can't rock with that. Takes toooo long to take down. Shit box braids can be annoying to take down. I want to do crochets (with hair not braids) or faux locs this time around. Last time I did faux locs I used yarn, this time I want to use Marley hair. It's a lot of time to do that though....so idk.

I'm still transitioning and its going good so far. I'm getting some box braids put in this week so I won't do too much messing with my hair because I can't help it lol

I've been natural for over three years and I love it! Right now I'm focusing on retention and hair health. I use a mix of Shea Moisture, Camille Rose Naturals, cheapie conditioners, and my DIY butters. Less is more for my hair.

blackonblack It really sucks to hear that people's parents are not supportive of natural hair, but I am glad to hear everything worked out with your mom in the long run! Box and micro braids are stressful! They take forever to be braided and a century and a half to be taken out. Besides that I'm really tender-headed (more so as of late) so I'm not feeling braids right now. Does the yarn or Marley hair look real? I need to check that out. xosnmxo Any particular style you're looking at? Transitioning was fun to me. auntieiyanla Hair health is something I need to work on as well. My hair has always shed a lot during washing, but I think it's gotten worse in recent years due to overall health and stress. Two questions : Has anyone here used Dr Miracles and had it work? Do any of you follow natural hair "gurus" on YouTube or Facebook?
