In honor of her first-ever Teen Vogue cover, Amandla Stenberg took over our Snapchat yesterday, taking us through her day that involved breakfast with friends, hanging with fellow teen feminist icon Rowan Blanchard, and just generally being the coolest girl in the world.
As Amandla was getting ready to sign off for the day, she took the time to get some important thoughts on identity off her chest.
“It’s a really really hard thing to be silenced and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in,” she says.
“As someone who identifies as a black, bisexual woman I’ve been through it, and it hurts, and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable…but then I realized because of Solange and Ava DuVernay and Willow and all the black girls watching this right now, that there’s absolutely nothing to change.”
And to anyone else whose ever felt that they need to hide who they really are to fit in, Amandla has some words of wisdom.
"We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow...Here I am being myself and it’s definitely hard and vulnerable and it’s definitely a process but I’m learning and I’m growing."
As if she weren’t already one of the most inspiring girls out there, Amandla just seriously took it to a new level.
