Kanye West was hospitalized after canceling the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour dates on Monday, November 21, Us Weekly can confirm.
A source familiar with the situation told NBC News that Los Angeles police responded to a medical welfare call about 1:20 p.m. PT. No criminal activity was involved and that the decision to hospitalize West was for his own health and safety. According to TMZ, the rapper was taken to UCLA Medical Center and after being evaluated for severe sleep deprivation it was determined he "needed to be admitted" for psychiatric evaluation. The site reports that West did not want to be taken to the hospital and "was placed in handcuffs when he was transported."
As previously reported by Us, West abruptly ended his show in Sacramento early on Saturday, November 19, after going off on a rant about Beyoncé, Jay Z, Hillary Clinton and the media. His wife, Kim Kardashian, jetted off to New York City early Monday morning and is expected to make an appearance at the Angel Gala in honor of her late father Robert Kardashian on Monday evening.
"He's just exhausted," a source told Us of why West pulled the plug on his remaining shows. "He's been working around the clock on fashion design, both his own line and the Adidas line. He's a notorious workaholic ... so balancing both that work — which is extremely important to him — and the rigors of the tour every night, it really wore him out. All the time spent away from his family has been a stress on him, as well. They are the most important to him. Obviously he's a professional and wants to give his fans a great experience, and I think his gut was telling him not to extend the tour through the end of the year, but he decided to push through. He doesn't want to give his fans anything less than the best."
