Maryvale couple's home vandalized over Trump support
PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - A Maryvale couple believe neighbors are responsible for threats and vandalism to their home for being Donald Trump supporters.
"It's heartbreaking, it's disturbing that our neighbors changed on us so quickly," Patricia Thomas said.
Over the last few weeks, Danny and Patricia Thomas say they've been called names, harassed and even egged for supporting the president-elect.
"It's OK to disagree but respect me and don't vandalize my home," Danny Thomas said.
A day after the election, surveillance cameras caught what appears to be two teens throwing eggs at the family's home, which took days to clean up.
"If you throw an egg that means you can throw a brick, you can throw a cocktail bomb and you can set my house on fire and hurt my loved ones, and I'm not going to have it," Danny Thomas said.
The couple believe they're being targeted because of their political beliefs in what they call a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incidents as criminal damage.
"I'm African American but you don't know that because you see Trump and you've heard that Trump supporters are racist," Patricia Thomas said.
While some see Trump as a negative change, they agree the vandalism has gone too far.
"He offended a lot of people and a lot of people are mad and they're scared," said Claudia Meraz, who works nearby.
"I do think we should respect everyone's opinion," she said.
Others in the neighborhood who also support Trump hope the incidents stop.
"Despite political differences, it's not an excuse to vandalize other people's property or lash out," said Justin Codo, a Trump supporter who lives nearby.
Now that the election is over, the Thomases have taken down their political signs. They hope the neighborhood can now come together.
"I truly hope and believe that we can unite and make this a better country," Danny Thomas said.

Oops. How unfortunate?
