lawrence is a good due but he was selfish, unmotivated, and obtuse. he was unemployed for 4 years; he was “too good” for entry level jobs. he had no impetus to get a job of his own because he knew Issa would financially support him. he probably was going through a depression however that’s hard for someone to deal with for four years.

he only had an impetus to change when she threatened to leave him and for him to guilt her and say ‘i did this for you!’… sir, you should have done this for yourself. if you do things because of other people, when your feelings for them change, do your actions change? he should have had enough integrity to speak up.

issa should have communicated her issues clearly with lawrence however she is someone who definitely avoids conflict and then acts out. Lawrence did not deserve to be cheated on but he most certainly deserved to be left. i see folks saying that Tasha supported lawrence and issa didn’t… you don’t think she was doing that for at least 2.5 years of their relationship?

issa [the creator] noted that she wanted the woman to cheat on the man because… if a man did it, a lot more people [i’m not saying you], but a lot more people would be more sympathetic to lawrence and urge issa to think about reconciling. the collective conscious of the society is conditioned for it to be acceptable for a man to be so selfish and self-centered and the woman to be so accommodating and selfless.

I have a big issue with women being with a man and thinking he’s worthless if he doesn’t have his career figured out. I think it’s trash to expect a man to be anything other than who he is. They were dating for 5 years, he was unemployed for 4. If you’re not happy with him then move on. But to sit and stay with a guy and badger him for 4 years until he’s the man you want him to be is selfish.
If you want to date a doctor, date a doctor. But don’t date a man who works for UPS and then be mad at him for not being more ambitious because he’s happy working for UPS and not being an doctor.
That’s how I feel about a lot of situations when it comes to dating. If you don’t want to be with someone, don’t be with them. That’s why Issa was trash. Because if you are upset living with a man who is collecting unemployment, end the relationship. The judgment and feeling like you can be on your high horse because you have a career and he isn’t is sick. Very profound point by Issa (the creator) that people would expect women to be accomodating. In the same vein of challenging norms, I want to challenge the idea that expecting a man to be other than who he is is the best way for a woman to waster her own time
